How To Dual Boot Windows 10 with Kali Linux (2020) – Complete Guide

Kali Linux is a popular Linux distribution with almost all of the hacking software pre-installed in it. This is also more versatile and lightweight than most operating systems. Even Kali Linux is capable of performing most of the daily tasks, most of us still choose Windows OS for our everyday and multimedia needs.

A lot of amateur pen testers use Kali Linux on their virtual machine, but the virtual machine will certainly irritate you for a long time. Dual boot windows 10 and Kali Linux are the only option for those people who have a similar situation.

Don’t know what is Dual booting ? It's the method of installing two entirely different operating systems on the same PC / Laptop. With dual boot, you can simply pick your operating system before the system starts up. Sounds pretty right, huh? In this post, we're going to tell you a full guide to the dual boot of your Kali Linux along with your windows 10 rig. So, without wasting any more time, let us continue with the actual post.

How to Dual Boot Windows 10 with Kali Linux


First of all, you need to download your Kali Linux iso file head over to the link below and pick your preferred version of Kali Linux.


It is recommended that you download the standard edition of Kali Linux because it has all the main resources for your gradient. If you're just going to use Kali Linux for a specific task, you can use the Lite version.


You need a simple program named "RUFUS" to render the iso bootable, which simplifies the whole operation. Just go over to this page and download Rufus and install it on your computer.


Open the downloaded Rufus program and connect your USB pen drive to your device. [Do remember that all of your data on the pen drive will be removed. So don't forget to take backup of the data]Now select your pen drive and iso which you have downloaded recently. Then, press the start button and have a coffee. After this process reaches 100 % kindly unplug your pen drive from your computer.


You cannot actually install two different Operating System in the same partition of your HDD / SSD. So you need to allocate separate memory for your Linux. To do this simply click your WIN+X key and select disk management or Press Ctrl+R and type diskmgmt.msc.

Now select any of your partition and click shrink. Now enter the amount of MB you are going to shrink. For using Kali Linux it is recommended to have at least 30 GB of space for fluid usage.


It’s time to actually boot up your Kali Linux into your system. Restart your computer and enter into your boot menu by clicking the boot key. If you don’t know always use you Google. (Also don’t forget to enable USB boot in bios settings). Select your pen drive and hit Enter key.

Now the booting process will begin and you’re prompted with a welcome screen of Kali Linux from which you need to select Graphical Install.

  1. Select your preferred language and click next button.

  2. Select your Country and click next button.

  3. Choose your Keyboard Layout and click next button.

  4. Select your Network Configuration, and Make the Hostname as default and click the next button.

  5. In Domain Field, you can simply leave blank.

  6. Now you have to choose your root password and again verify your password.

  7. Now you are at the crucial stage of dual booting your Windows 10 and Kali Linux. This is the stage where most of the users get confused and here we made it very simple to avoid any sort of confusion.

  8. Select the manual in Partition disks and hit continue.

  9. Select the partition which you have created in the disk manager in windows and hit the continue button.

  10. Now select Automatically partition the new space and hit continue.

  11. Select All Files in one partition and select Finish partition and write changes to disk. Now as usual click the continue button.

  12. Now the system will ask you permission to the system. Hit Yes and wait for 15 minutes while the installation process is finished. After System Installation, Select NO in network mirror and Yes to Grub bootloader and click continue to finish the installation process.

  13. It’s time to just eject your USB and restart your computer. Now you are in Grub bootloader where you need to select your Operating System to boot in. That’s it. You are successfully dual boot your Kali Linux along with your windows 10.
